Boost Your Libido

Finding that sex drive is at an all-time low these days?  You used to want to pounce your partner and rip his clothes off, but now… not so much?  The good news is that you’re not alone.  Even better news is that there are many natural ways to feel your absolute best on every level, including how you feel between the sheets.  With all the responsibilities, appointments, and tasks we have to manage day-to-day, we often don’t make time for ourselves or realize the actual root of the problem.  Here are a few unique reasons why your sex drive might be on vacation, and how you can bring it back.

Research has shown that women are prone to cognitive distractions.  A messy bedroom for example, can lead our mind towards cleaning, rather than getting it on.  You have two options to fix this.  #1-Don’t be such a perfectionist, or #2 – just tackle the clutter in your life.  Make an effort to keep your place tidy, and organized, so when the moment strikes, there are no excuses.

Whether it’s towards your partner, a friend or even towards yourself, you can learn how to effectively communicate how you feel and approach those emotions head-on.  Forgive and move forward. Anger squashes all desire.  If you want more desire, then you need to squash the anger.  Life is too darn short.  Just choose happiness!

Did something happen in your past and you’re still feeling like it’s weighing you down?  Even though the event may have happened ages ago, if you haven’t taken the right steps to move forward from it, it will continue to affect your energy and your sex drive.  Some mental health professionals believe that post-traumatic stress disorder is directly linked to a decreased libido.  We can’t change what happened in the past, but we can change our reaction.

Whether its work related, financial or physical – Often times, women allow their worries to boggle them down, which will decrease energy and libido dramatically.  Sex is one of the best (if not the best) ways to relieve stress, other than the gym of course.  Some things in life are beyond your control, but your love making abilities should not be one of them.  Maybe a good sweat session with your man could be the cure to help you forget about some of life’s problems!

It’s a little sad that the one thing many women take to help them feel more comfortable about having sex could be the one thing that’s making their sex drive disappear.  The Pill is known to cause many side effects, and most common are mood swings and libido changes.  Remember that what works for one women, may be different from another.  If you’re noticing a direct link from when you started using the pill to when your libido plummeted, try asking your Doctor for a different approach.

It is a well-known fact that people who exercise daily are generally happier people, and have significantly higher sex drives.  If it’s not one of the above-mentioned reasons for your lack of love making, then it might just be the fact that you’re not moving that beautiful body of yours enough.  Summer is approaching us, so perhaps it’s time to invest in a personal trainer or find a gym buddy to help you get back into a steady routine.  If you’re crunched for time, or cant afford a gym membership, there are a ton of great resources online for quick at-home workouts.  And always remember that something is better than nothing. The best exercise is the one you will do (A teacher and fellow personal trainer at CSNN told me this).  All it takes is 15-20 minutes of physical activity to change your day around, and elevate your mood. Endorphins for the win!

There is a direct link between our nutrition, our energy level and how we feel about ourselves.  Reducing the amount of processed foods, and incorporating more natural whole foods, ones rich in minerals such as zinc, and magnesium can help improve blood flow and libido.  These are a list of foods that help get that blood flowing or give our bodies nutrients we may be deficient in otherwise.  I know many women may want to improve their nutrition, not only for the sake of their libido or relationship, but just to improve overall health, body image and self-confidence.

Poached, scrambled, fried, deviled.  No matter how you make them, a couple of eggs will rev you up after a long day so you can go the distance in the dark.  Eggs are high in protein, which is a source of stamina, and they’re also low in calories.  In addition, they’re a good source for an amino acid L-Arginine, which allows more blood flow.  Try having a2-3 for breakfast each morn with some spinach and blackberries (see below).

A nice cut of grass-fed beef is high in the ultimate sex mineral, Zinc, which blocks the enzyme aromatase from converting testosterone into estrogen.  Testosterone appears to play a direct role in sexual desire for both men and women, and foods that help promote the hormone are likely to help improve libido.  A deficiency of zinc can also result in a low sperm count and a weak sex drive for men.  Consider going out for a nice Filet Mignon, next time you dine out!

This can raise testosterone levels because it’s high in magnesium, which makes it more difficult for testosterone to latch onto proteins in the body.  As a result, testosterone is distributed in the blood, helping to kick up your sex drive.  I would recommend fresh and wild over farmed.

Zinc plays a central role in the creation of hormones and clitoris sensitivity, and though Oysters are a well-known aphrodisiac due to the high amount of zinc, these shellfish can often absorb the toxins and parasites found in the ocean.  Try making an omelet with full eggs and spinach for breakfast, or hard-boiled eggs, sliced over spinach salad (see #1).

Raw, sautéed, or steamed, toss this vegetable in with your salad or alongside your steak for a bedroom boost.  The Vitamin C aids in blood circulation to organs and has also been associated with an improved female libido.

There is no magic love potion but aphrodisiacs are foods that look sexually suggestive like this veggie.  This is considered one of the best libido-boosting foods since it’s rich in folate – a naturally occurring form of folic acid.  Folate regulates the production of histamine – the chemical that is released during an orgasm.  This vegetable pairs well with filet mignon (See #2).

You can add this to everything imaginable.  Garlic contains allicin, a compound that thins the blood.  Because of this, it improves the blood circulation, relaxing the arteries.  Having strong circulation also allows for greater physical endurance in the bedroom ladies!

This also contains allicin, as mentioned above.  Ginger is perfect to mix into a beef and broccoli stir-fry.  If you’re Vegan, use ginger with sprouts, and other mixed veggies OR try ginger tea to get the same benefits.

Researchers found that women who took a ginseng supplement significantly upped their libido over the course of 1 month, and 68 percent also said their overall sex life improved dramatically.

Not only a great protein source, but they also contain zinc, the ultimate sex mineral.  Studies show that women with a greater sex drive tend to have higher levels of testosterone (don’t be worried!).  Zinc blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen.  A quarter-cup serving of pumpkin seeds may do the trick.  You can also add them to your spinach salad.

Drinking a powdered or liquid greens supplement is extremely beneficial.  Microalgaes such as spirulina, blue algae and chlorella have been found to be effective way to improve energy and libido.

This phytochemical-rich food enhances both libido and sexual endurance.  You could try some lactose-free Greek Yogurt, with pumpkin seed and blueberries for a well-balanced mid afternoon libido boosting snack.

This fantastic fruit contains a phytonutrient called Citrulline, which the body converts to Arginine, an amino acid that boosts nitric oxide levels in the body.  This helps relax blood vessels in the same way a medicine like Viagra does.  It’s a great pre-workout or pre-sexy-time carb source!

Besides enhancing sex drive, these nutty-flavored seeds contain essential fatty acids, including omega-3 + omega-6, which are the major building blocks of all sex hormones.  Flaxseed oil has twice the omega acids of fish, and 2 tablespoons of the seeds deliver 140 percent of your RDA.  To rev your engine, take 1 TBSP of raw flaxseed oil, use it on salad or sprinkle 1 TBSP of seeds into your protein smoothie.  If you don’t have enough fatty acids, your hormone levels may decrease, and so will your desire to get it on.

I’ll end this lusty list of tips by saying that your low libido level is only temporary.  It can and will be fixed, ONLY if you’re ready to take the right steps to improve it.
